Folding bike in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam you cycle everywhere, but a regular bike is only allowed on trams and the metro in a limited way, and where do you put it in a narrow canal house? A STRIDA folds in seconds into a slim stick on two wheels. You take it on public transport for free and park it in your hallway.

Tram, metro, bus and ferry (GVB)

GVB treats a folded folding bike as hand luggage: it travels free, also in rush hour. A regular bike is only allowed, for a fee, on the metro and tram 26, and not in rush hour (Monday to Friday 7:00-9:00 and 16:00-18:30). Every bike travels free on the ferries across the IJ.

By train

Folded, a folding bike goes on the train as hand luggage, without an extra ticket and also in rush hour. A regular bike needs a bike day ticket and is not allowed in rush hour. So you can take the train to Amsterdam Centraal, Zuid or Sloterdijk and ride the last stretch.

Your employer and tax

In 2026 your employer may pay you up to €0.25 per kilometre tax-free for your commute, also by bike. Through the work-related costs scheme (WKR) your employer can give or reimburse a bike tax-free, directly with us or via Nationale Fiets Projecten or FiscFree. A company bike you also use privately adds 7% of the list price a year to your taxable income. Dutch bike vouchers (Nationale Fietsbon): email us at info@strida.nl. More from the Belastingdienst.

Which STRIDA suits Amsterdam?

The LT and the 5 QR+ have 16 inch wheels and fold the most compact: handy for the tram and a small home. The SX has 18 inch wheels and rides more calmly over cobbles and longer distances. All three run on an oil-free belt, so no dirty trouser legs.

Keeping your STRIDA running in Amsterdam

The STRIDA is simple by design, so most maintenance is something you can do at home. Our manuals walk you through changing a tyre, the belt or the brake pads, and we stock nearly every part, for older models too. Prefer a professional? Any good bike mechanic in your neighbourhood can do it: ask them to contact us at info@strida.nl and we will advise them and supply the parts.

A STRIDA needs little maintenance: no chain to oil and a belt that lasts a long time. And what does need doing, you can mostly do yourself: the wheels are mounted on one side only, so you change a tyre without taking the wheel out of the frame, and our manuals guide you step by step. Still stuck, or no time? Give us the name and e-mail address of a bike shop near you: we will introduce ourselves and help them with advice and parts.

We only use these details to e-mail the bike shop once and send you a copy. We keep them for at most 2 years.
